Shopping at H-E-B takes a little getting used to if you are not a Texas native…I know the first time I walked in and saw all those yellow coupons hanging up I thought I had entered the Twilight Zone. But now I really love it and it is a great store to save money at by buying their Meal Deal, Texas Showdown or Combo Loco Items. Each week they offer free items when you buy the item advertised which can lead to big savings…IF you need/want the free items. Shopping at H-E-B is a little different because to get their specials, you will need to bring the yellow coupons with you to the register. These coupons are hanging on or near the sale items in the store and are easy to use. If you really like a deal, you can purchase as many as you want by bringing multiple copies of the coupon to the register.
They do accept one store coupon and one manufacturer coupon per item, but most of the yellow coupons are actually from the manufacturer. There will be a code in a black box on each coupon that has either an ‘S’ for store, ‘B’ for Big Savings, or an ‘M’ for manufacturer. If the coupon is coded ‘S’ or ‘B’ you are in luck and can stack a manufacturer coupon with it! I have found very few occasions where this was possible during my time as an H-E-B shopper. I also wish their ads would have more prices listed and less $ off with in-store coupons…It helps to know what you will pay for an item before you get there! I include prices on my weekly matchups and unadvertised deals as soon as I get a chance to confirm them in -store so you’ll know what you are going to pay for each deal.
Their advertised specials are not always that great, but if you have time to go up and down the aisles, you can find some great deals (or you can check out my post on all the unadvertised deals I found). You can cut your bill at least 50% and sometimes more at H-E-B with a little planning! Once I learned how to shop at H-E-B, I have really saved big!
H-E-B has incredible customer service and is always nice to shop at. They keep the shelves well stocked, always have plenty of the sale items and the employees are extremely friendly. They even have an awesome “Fresh or Free Guarantee” that allows you to get a free fresh item if you find an expired item in the store. Just take the expired item and fresh to the register with the rest of your groceries and let the cashier know you found an “Out of Date”. That is one of the reasons that I love my H-E-B, when they say “No Store Does More” they mean it!
